The Model Card
The Model Card is an important first document to create for every AI model. It helps with capturing all important properties of an AI model in a concise format. Following a standard document structure, writing and consuming Model Cards is much more comfortable than a plain text document. Since the outline is given and widely accepted, no important aspects are forgotten.
While some Model Cards in the wild are pretty extensive, in the best case the Model Card for your AI model is no longer than one or two pages. But still, it’s a text document. Shouldn’t Model Cards be a great candidate to be turned into a Canvas?
The Model Card Canvas
algo consult provides a free, no-questions-asked AI Model Card Canvas template for developing strategy and tactics quickly and using a more visual structure, for example in a workshop, or any collaborative situation.
You will find downloads at the bottom of this page.
Our Model Card Canvas helps teams to collect all the information needed in the final Model Card. The canvas can be used as a poster, well suited for collaboration, presentation and explaining it to others. The arrangement of the canvas’ sections follows a certain order that guides you developing the actual content.
You can put it on walls as large print-outs so everyone present in a room can easily inspect and contribute. Or go the fully digital way, by displaying it on a whiteboard collaboration tool like miro.
In a workshop, the canvas is quickly filled with sticky notes by all participants in parallel. The notes can be moved around as needed, added, grouped and discarded. This helps to evolve and discuss ideas.
After the canvas is completed
Let’s be honest, the short notes on a canvas are not always self-explanatory and might miss essential details. They work great for exploration and initial assessment. But they might not be ready to be shared with others downstream, like for example the customers of your model. So please take the time to turn the canvas into a full-fledged model card. Hugging Face provides an excellent annotated Model Card.
Introducing: The AI Model Card Canvas
Model Cards have been proposed in 2018 by Margaret Mitchell et al. in the paper “Model Cards for Model Reporting” paper. A Model Card is like an ID card for your AI model, mixed with birth certificate information.
The motivation for proposing Model Cards came out of the apparent lack of AI model documentation.
Our AI Model Card Canvas is structured slightly differently than the originally proposed Model Card outline from the paper. The layout is intended to more or less reflect the creation of a Model from invention to release from left to right. Also, the three rows correspond to the important aspects governance that guided the model creation, relevant data throughout the model creation process as well as business considerations, respectively.
